Can Non Casters Use Scrolls?
Scrolls are powerful magical items that contain spells. They can be used by spellcasters to cast spells that they do not have prepared or do not have access to. However, when it comes to non casters, the rules for using scrolls are a bit more complicated.
According to the official rules, non casters are not able to use spell scrolls. The exception to this rule is for characters who have a class spell list but do not have spell slots. This is usually seen in half-casters, like Paladins, at first level before they have access to spells and spell slots.
There are two kinds of scrolls in 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons – spell scrolls and other scrolls. Non casters are able to use “other” scrolls without any restrictions. These scrolls often provide useful information or have non magical effects. However, spell scrolls can only be used by a class that has that specific spell on their spell list. For example, a Cleric can only use spell scrolls that contain Cleric spells.
It’s worth noting that some specific classes, like the Trickster Rogue and Eldritch Knight, have the ability to use wizard scrolls. This means that they are able to use spell scrolls that contain wizard spells, despite not being full casters.
In the Solasta: Crown of the Magister game, in order to use a scroll, a character must have the respective spell on their class spell list. For example, a Cleric can only use scrolls that contain cleric spells. Additionally, wizards can use scrolls to scribe spells into their spellbook, effectively learning the spell in the process.
In the Pathfinder system, the rules are similar. Arcane spellcasters, such as wizards, sorcerers, and bards, can only use scrolls containing arcane spells. Divine spellcasters, like clerics, druids, paladins, and rangers, can only use scrolls containing divine spells. The type of scroll a character can create is also determined by their class.
When it comes to using spell scrolls in Pathfinder, anyone can use “other” scrolls, but spell scrolls can only be used by a class that has that spell on their class spell list. However, there are some exceptions and limitations. For example, tricksters and eldritch knights can use wizard scrolls, even if they are not full casters.
In Pathfinder, alchemists need to make a Use Magic Device (UMD) check to use any scroll. They can also create scrolls, but they can only scribe spells they have prepared into the scrolls. Similarly, warlocks cannot create scrolls unless they know the spell that they want to scribe into the scroll. They can only scribe spells they know into scrolls.
In conclusion, the rules for non casters using scrolls vary depending on the system being used. In general, non casters are not able to use spell scrolls, but there are exceptions for certain classes or archetypes. Non casters can still benefit from other scrolls that offer non magical effects or useful information.
