Exploring Alternate Realities

The short answer is yes, but in a significantly altered form. While the real-world Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, and the broader Cyberpunk lore originating from the 1980s, operates on an alternate timeline where the USSR persists. However, it’s not the monolithic superpower it once was; instead, it’s presented as a weakened, fragmented, and evolving political entity struggling to maintain relevance in a world dominated by megacorporations and geopolitical instability.

The persistence of the USSR in Cyberpunk is not simply a historical oversight. It reflects the anxieties and futurist visions of the Cold War era, where the Soviet Union was a central fixture on the world stage. The game and its source material use the continued existence of the USSR to explore themes of ideological conflict, geopolitical power struggles, and the potential consequences of unchecked corporate power. Instead of disappearing entirely, the Soviet Union has adapted and mutated, becoming a shadow of its former self and a player in the complex power dynamics of the Cyberpunk world.

The State of the Soviet Union in Cyberpunk

In Cyberpunk 2077, the USSR is not the sprawling empire it was in the real world. The dissolution still occurred, but not to the same extent. Several factors contributed to this divergence.

Altered Political Landscape: The political dynamics of the Cyberpunk world are dramatically different. Megacorporations wield enormous influence, often surpassing national governments in power. This altered landscape reshapes international relations, creating new alliances and conflicts that affect the Soviet Union’s trajectory.

Technological Advancements: The technological advancements of the Cyberpunk universe, particularly in areas like cybernetics, artificial intelligence, and net technology, have profound impacts on all nations, including the USSR. These advancements alter warfare, economics, and social structures, forcing the Soviet Union to adapt or become obsolete.

Internal Struggles: The USSR likely faces its own internal challenges, including economic instability, regional separatism, and political corruption. These issues weaken the country and make it vulnerable to external pressures and corporate manipulation.

The game presents a picture of a Soviet Union diminished in size and influence but still possessing significant military capabilities and strategic resources. It remains a player on the global stage, engaging in espionage, proxy wars, and economic competition with other superpowers and corporations.

Thematic Significance of the USSR’s Survival

The survival of the USSR in Cyberpunk serves several thematic purposes:

Nostalgia and Retrofuturism: The presence of the USSR evokes a sense of nostalgia for the Cold War era and contributes to the retrofuturistic aesthetic that defines the Cyberpunk genre.

Ideological Conflict: The continued existence of the USSR highlights the ongoing conflict between communism and capitalism, even in a world where both ideologies have been distorted and corrupted by corporate power.

Critique of Corporate Power: By presenting the USSR as a flawed but still-existing alternative to corporate dominance, the game implicitly critiques the unchecked power of megacorporations and their potential for exploitation and oppression.

Exploration of Alternate Histories: The divergent timeline of Cyberpunk allows the game to explore alternate historical trajectories and speculate on the potential consequences of different political and technological developments.

Ultimately, the USSR’s survival in Cyberpunk is a testament to the enduring power of the Cold War imaginary and its continuing relevance in a world grappling with issues of globalization, technological disruption, and ideological conflict. It presents a distorted, cautionary vision of what might have been and what could still be if unchecked corporate power and geopolitical instability continue to shape the future.
