During the early days of Nintendo of America, Segale was their warehouse landlord. Employees noted a resemblance between Segale and the then-unnamed character, originally known as Jumpman, and began jokingly referring to him as “Mario.” Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the character, heard the nickname and found it fitting, cementing “Mario” as the name we all know and love.
