WoW: Mage SoD Runes

WoW Classic players can now enjoy the Season of Discovery (SoD) which introduced various Runes to WoW to enhance the Mage class.

World of Warcraft (WoW) is an explorative video game that takes place within the world of Azeroth.

You can control a Warcraft hero to explore an open game, fight a range of monsters, complete quests and progress through dungeons as well as raids.

Mage SoD Runes

Blizzard recently released a major update for WoW Classic, which essentially recreates WoW in the state that it was in before the release of its first expansion.

The Season of Discovery update introduced several new features that WoW Classic players can enjoy, however, the biggest addition is the new Rune system.

Runes can be assigned to equipment slots and can provide your character with powerful passive effects.

Keep in mind though that the Runes you can use are determined by your character’s class. For the Mages, there are 12 Runes that can enhance your character’s capabilities.

It is important to note that every Rune has unique effects and bonuses. This new system essentially allows players to customize their character builds even more, however, you will only be able to equip Runes once your character has reached level 25.

The Runes you have to use for your character will depend on the type of Mage you are. This means that the DPS Fire Mage will not use the same Runes as the Healing Arcane Mage.

We therefore recommend that you carefully consider which type of Mage you want to be before farming and equipping the Runes.

Best Mage Runes

When you have decided which Mage you want to be, you can equip the following Runes to your items to enhance their capabilities:

Build Recommended Runes
Healing Mage
  • Regeneration (Chest): Enables you to heal a friendly target over time.
  • Arcane Blast (Hands): This deals Arcane damage to the target, but each cast increases the damage and the healing of all other Arcane spells.
  • Mass Regeneration (Legs): This heals all nearby party members over time.
DPS Mage
  • Burnout (Chest): Increases your spell critical chance
  • Living Bomb (Hands): It makes your target receive Fire Damage over 12 seconds.
  • Living Flame (Legs): This launches a Fire damage attack at your opponent.

How to acquire the Runes

Players have to complete a quest, vanquish a monster or open a chest in order to unlock a specific Rune. The table outlines how you can acquire the best Runes for each type of mage:

Rune How to acquire
Burnout
  • Dun Morogh: Players have to attack Frozen Trogg enemies with fire spells.
  • Durotar: You have to attack Frozen Makrura enemies with fire spells.
Living Bomb
  • Loch Modan: You have to kill the Stonesplinter Seer on the northern island in the large lake.
Living Flame
  • Tirisfal: Players have to defeat Scarlet Warrior, who can be found near Solliden Farmstead.
  • Elwynn Forest: You have to kill Kobold Geomancer in and around Jasperlode Mine.
Regeneration
  • Westfall: This Rune drops from Defias Pillager enemies.
  • The Barrens: Players must open Kolkar’s Booty Chest, which requires Kolkar Booty Key. You can procure this key by defeating Kolkar mobs.
Arcane Blast
  • Players have to find 3 crystals along the Zoram Strand and cast Arcane Explosion on each of the crystals to get the Rune.
Mass Regeneration
  • You have to go to the Raven Hill Cemetery in Duskwood and enter the right crypt.  Take the left corridor and you will enter a room in which you will find Decrepit Phylactery. Players can then enter the left crypt and turn into the right corridor. In this room you can use the Decrepit Phylactery on the skeleton and defeat it to obtain the Rune.

How to equip Runes

Once you have acquired the Runes that you want to equip on your items, you have to open the Equipment screen to find the list of known Runes.

In the list, you have to select the Rune that you want to equip and once it is selected, all equipment slots will gray out except the one that the Rune can be engraved on.

You can then select the item to equip the Rune, but keep in mind that you may have to wait a few seconds for the process to complete.

Additional Runes

In addition to the Runes mentioned above, you can use the following Runes on your Mage in WoW:

Rune Description
Fingers of Frost Gives your Chille effects a 15 percent chance to grant you the Fingers of Frost effect.
Enlightenment Rune You will deal 10 percent additional damage and you have more than 70 percent mana.
Icy Veins It hastens your spellcasting by increasing spell casting speed by 20 percent.
Rewind Time Your current target with your Temporal Beacon instantly heals all damage taken in the last 5 seconds.
