The burning question on every fighting game aficionado’s mind: Can you play Marvel vs Capcom 3 on PS5? The answer is a bit nuanced, but here’s the straightforward scoop: Yes, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (UMvC3) is playable on the PS5, thanks to the console’s backward compatibility features. However, the experience isn’t quite as seamless as playing a native PS5 title. Let’s break down the details to give you the complete picture.
Understanding PS5 Backward Compatibility
The PS5 boasts impressive backward compatibility, allowing you to play a vast library of PS4 games. Since Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 received a PS4 re-release, this version is the one that can be played on the PS5. You can insert the physical disc (if you own it) or download the digital version from the PlayStation Store (if you purchased it previously).
However, it’s important to manage expectations. The PS5 plays the PS4 version of the game. This means you won’t see any dramatic graphical enhancements or performance boosts specifically designed for the PS5. Think of it as playing the PS4 version on more powerful hardware, which generally results in smoother performance and faster loading times, but nothing beyond that.
Key Considerations for Playing UMvC3 on PS5
While technically playable, there are a few key considerations to keep in mind when diving into Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 on your PS5:
- PS4 Version Required: You must own the PS4 version of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 to play it on the PS5. The original PS3 version is not directly compatible.
- No Native PS5 Enhancements: Don’t expect any visual overhauls or performance upgrades beyond what the PS5’s hardware naturally provides. The game will essentially run as it did on the PS4, possibly with improved loading speeds.
- Online Functionality: Online functionality should work as expected, allowing you to battle opponents from around the world. However, remember that online services are subject to PlayStation Network’s terms of service and privacy policy. Ensure you have an active PlayStation Plus subscription for online multiplayer.
- Potential Feature Differences: The original article mentioned that “some features available on PS4 may be absent” on PS5, which is misleading. Since the game is running the PS4 version, all features from that version should be present.
- Availability: While you may be able to download it from the PlayStation store if you purchased it before, it’s not currently for sale due to licensing issues with Marvel.
