As of Season 17, the PC version of Apex Legends features 12 playable female characters: Ash, Bangalore, Catalyst, Horizon, Lifeline, Loba, Mad Maggie, Rampart, Valkyrie, Vantage, Wattson, and Wraith. But female representation in Apex Legends goes far beyond just the roster. Let’s delve deeper into the presence of female players, pro gamers, and the overall impact of female characters within the Apex Legends universe.
Female Representation: More Than Just Playable Characters
While having a diverse cast of female characters is a great start, it’s crucial to examine the broader representation of women in the Apex Legends community. This includes the percentage of female players, their visibility in the professional esports scene, and the complexities of gender identity within the game’s lore.
Percentage of Female Apex Legends Players
Studies indicate that female players make up a significant portion of the Apex Legends player base. One survey reported that 29% of players identified as female, compared to 70% male and 1% non-binary or other. This demonstrates a substantial female presence, highlighting the importance of inclusive character design and community engagement. However, there is always space for more representation in the gaming world as a whole, for example, see the Games Learning Society for more on gaming and education.
Female Pros in the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS)
The professional Apex Legends scene, like many esports, has historically been male-dominated. However, talented female players are making inroads and demonstrating their skills at the highest level. Lauren ‘GuhRL’ Habibi, Elvira ‘Esdesu’ Temirova, and Kornelia ‘Sabz’ Zawistowska are some of the most recognizable names who have competed in the ALGS.
TSM’s all-women pro Apex squad featuring Janey, Sabz, Avuhlie, and GuhRL is a testament to the growing talent pool and the increasing opportunities for female players to compete professionally.
