No, Games with Gold is no longer a thing. It officially ended on September 1, 2023, and was replaced by Xbox Game Pass Core. While Games with Gold is gone, the legacy of free monthly games lives on, albeit in a reimagined form.
What Happened to Games with Gold?
For years, Games with Gold offered subscribers of Xbox Live Gold (later also included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate) a selection of free games each month. It was a great way to build a digital game library and discover new titles. However, Microsoft decided to evolve its subscription services to better reflect the gaming landscape and offer more value to its users. This evolution led to the introduction of Xbox Game Pass Core, which launched on September 14, 2023.
The Dawn of Xbox Game Pass Core
Xbox Game Pass Core is designed to provide a curated library of over 25 games available for subscribers to play. This library includes a mix of popular titles such as Among Us, Doom Eternal, Gears 5, and Psychonauts 2, with plans to regularly update the selection. It also includes online multiplayer access, which was previously the main benefit of Xbox Live Gold.
What Does This Mean for Your Existing Games with Gold Titles?
This is perhaps the most important question for anyone who was a long-time subscriber. The good news is that any Xbox 360 games you claimed through Games with Gold are yours to keep, regardless of your current subscription status. However, Xbox One games claimed through Games with Gold are only accessible if you remain a subscriber to either Xbox Game Pass Core or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. If your subscription lapses, you will lose access to these Xbox One titles until you resubscribe.
Games with Gold Legacy Program
The important nuance here is the platform of the game you claimed. Xbox 360 games were designed from the start to be yours to keep. Xbox One games are tied to your active subscription status. It’s also vital to note that this only applies to games claimed through Games with Gold. Any games purchased through the Xbox store are yours to keep regardless of any subscription.
