The short answer is: No, GTA V on PS4 and PS5 are not the same. While you can play the PS4 version of Grand Theft Auto V on a PS5, the experience differs significantly from the specially enhanced PS5 version, also known as the Expanded and Enhanced Edition. This upgraded version leverages the advanced capabilities of the PS5, offering a dramatically superior gaming experience compared to its last-gen counterpart.
Understanding the Key Differences
The core difference stems from the underlying technology of each console. The PS5 boasts significantly more processing power and advanced graphics capabilities compared to the PS4, enabling features that simply aren’t achievable on older hardware. This leads to several key distinctions:
Graphics and Visual Fidelity
The most noticeable difference is in the visual quality. The PS5 version of GTA V offers enhanced graphics, including sharper textures, improved lighting, and higher draw distances. These improvements make the game world look much more detailed and immersive. While the PS4 version can run on a PS5, it does so at the same fidelity as on the last-gen console. The PS5 version is noticeably sharper, more colourful and is closer than ever to the maxed-out PC version. The PS4 version even when played on a PS5, looks dated by comparison.
Performance and Frame Rates
One of the most significant upgrades is the performance boost. The PS5 version targets a smooth 60 frames per second (FPS), while the PS4 version is capped at 30 FPS. This higher frame rate results in a much more fluid and responsive gameplay experience, particularly beneficial for fast-paced action sequences and online play.
Ray Tracing and Advanced Graphics
The PS5 version of GTA V leverages the console’s ray-tracing capabilities. Ray tracing is a rendering technique that produces more realistic lighting effects, including reflections, shadows, and refractions. This feature adds another layer of visual depth and immersion to the game. While it may not be as pervasive as in other titles, it still offers improvements over the PS4.
Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers
The PS5 DualSense controller introduces haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, which are fully utilized in the PS5 version of GTA V. These features add a new dimension to gameplay. For example, you can feel the rumble of an engine or the tension of a trigger as you accelerate or fire a weapon. These aren’t present in the PS4 version, offering a tactile gaming experience.
HSW Upgrades
The HSW (Hao’s Special Works) upgrades are exclusive to the current-gen version of GTA Online. These performance modifications for select vehicles offer players enhanced speed and handling. These aren’t available to the PS4 players and add to the feeling of missing out on key new content.
Continued Updates
Last but not least, the PS4 version of GTA Online will eventually stop receiving content updates, while the PS5 version will continue to be supported. This means that players who want to experience new content moving forward will eventually have to upgrade to the PS5 version.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes, upgrading to the PS5 is definitely worth it if you want the best possible GTA V experience. The enhanced graphics, smoother frame rates, ray tracing, HSW upgrades, and haptic feedback make a compelling case for the upgrade. The continuation of content updates is another major incentive.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while you can play the PS4 version of GTA V on your PS5, the true next-gen experience is found in the Expanded and Enhanced Edition of GTA V for PS5. The differences are significant enough to warrant a purchase for those who want the most immersive and enjoyable version of this classic game. With its superior visuals, performance, and features, the PS5 version of GTA V is the definitive way to play.
