Imprison is almost perfectly useless in competitive play as it’s gimmicky and situational, making it a less desirable choice for most players, only finding some utility in 1-on-1 battles where a Pokémon with protect/screens and imprison can stop a lot of Pokémon from succeeding. The effectiveness of imprison is heavily limited by its inability to affect opponents that do not share moves with the user, and its failure to prevent the use of Struggle when the target runs out of PP for its other moves.
Understanding Imprison
What is Imprison?
Imprison is a non-damaging Psychic-type move that prevents opponents from using any move that is also known by the user, including moves known by Pokémon switched in after imprison was used.
How Imprison Works
As long as the user of imprison remains in battle, the move will continue to restrict the opponents’ move sets. However, imprison will fail if no opponent possesses a move that the user knows at the time imprison is used.
