Sylvanas is indeed still an undead elf, but her current state is a result of a Valk’yr ritual, which is different from the standard Forsaken “rebirth,” and she is no longer just a banshee in the classical sense, having evolved into a more complex character with a unique set of abilities and motivations. Her transformation into a banshee was a result of Arthas‘ actions, who killed her and raised her as an incorporeal banshee in his service as punishment for hindering his invasion, and she has since become a central figure in the World of Warcraft universe, playing a key role in the Horde and Shadowlands storylines.
