The world of Sonic the Hedgehog is always in motion, a blur of speed and excitement. 2023 is proving to be a banner year for the iconic hedgehog, marked by new games, updates, and the anticipation of what’s to come. So, what exactly is the next Sonic game to hit consoles and PCs in 2023? The answer is Sonic Superstars.
Sonic Superstars: A Return to Classic Form
Sonic Superstars is a brand new 2D side-scrolling platformer that’s poised to capture the magic of the original Genesis/Mega Drive titles while introducing fresh mechanics and a stunning visual overhaul. Scheduled for release in Fall 2023 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC, Sonic Superstars marks a significant return to the series’ roots.
This isn’t just a rehash of old ideas, though. Sonic Superstars will introduce a brand new story featuring the familiar cast of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose as they battle the nefarious Dr. Eggman and a mysterious new antagonist. The game also boasts a cooperative multiplayer mode, allowing up to four players to experience the adventure together. New elemental powers add layers to the gameplay, enabling players to manipulate the environment and overcome obstacles in innovative ways.
The visual presentation of Sonic Superstars is a major departure from the pixelated charm of the original games. It utilizes a vibrant, high-definition art style, bringing the world of Sonic to life in a whole new way. This graphical update retains the core aesthetic of the classic games while offering a fresh and modern look.
Sonic Frontiers: The Final Horizon Update
While Sonic Superstars is the next fully-fledged game on the horizon, it’s important not to overlook the ongoing support for Sonic Frontiers. This open-world adventure received its third and final free content update, The Final Horizon, on September 28, 2023. This update added new story content, challenges, and the exciting ability to play as Tails, Amy, and Knuckles, significantly expanding the Sonic Frontiers experience. This addition addressed a major request from fans, proving that Sega is actively listening to and engaging with its community.
Beyond 2023: Looking Ahead
While 2023 is packed with Sonic goodness, the future holds even more promise. Sonic Prime Season 3 is scheduled to release in Q1 2024, along with a new Sonic mobile game. In Spring 2024, a DLC for Sonic Superstars is planned. Furthermore, the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie is slated for release in December 2024. The Sonic universe is expanding across multiple platforms and mediums, ensuring that fans will have plenty to look forward to.
The enduring popularity of Sonic speaks to the power of well-designed gameplay and engaging characters. The ongoing evolution of the series, as evidenced by Sonic Superstars and the updates to Sonic Frontiers, demonstrates Sega’s commitment to keeping the blue blur relevant for generations to come.
