So, what’s Mario’s middle name? The definitive answer, straight from the Mushroom Kingdom’s own creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, is Mario. That’s right, Mario Mario. This seemingly simple revelation has been the subject of much debate and speculation over the years, so let’s dive into the fascinating history behind this iconic character’s nomenclature.
A Name as Iconic as the Jumpscare
The “Super Mario Bros.” franchise has cemented itself as one of the most influential and recognizable video game series of all time. The titular character, Mario, a cheerful, mustachioed plumber, has become a global icon, transcending generations and cultural boundaries. But for years, his full name remained an enigma.
The Shifting Sands of Naming Conventions
The confusion surrounding Mario’s name stems from conflicting statements and interpretations throughout the character’s history. For a long time, the prevailing assumption, largely fueled by the 1993 live-action “Super Mario Bros.” movie, was that Mario and his brother Luigi shared a surname: Mario. This would make their full names Mario Mario and Luigi Mario, respectively.
However, official pronouncements muddied the waters. At various points, Nintendo executives, including Miyamoto himself, suggested that Mario didn’t have a last name at all. This led to the interpretation that “Mario” was simply his given name, leaving the last name blank.
The 30th Anniversary Revelation
The debate finally reached a crescendo in September 2015, during the Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary celebration. In a momentous pronouncement, Miyamoto officially declared Mario’s full name to be Mario Mario. This confirmation silenced the doubters and established the canonical name that persists to this day. It’s a name so nice, they named him twice!
Why “Mario Mario”?
The reasons behind this naming decision are multifaceted. From a practical perspective, it’s undeniably catchy and memorable. It also pays homage to the original game’s era, where characters were often defined by simple, easily-remembered names. Perhaps more importantly, it reinforces the familial bond between Mario and Luigi, solidifying their status as brothers sharing the same legacy.
Ultimately, the name “Mario Mario” is a testament to the enduring appeal and iconic status of this beloved video game character. It’s a name that resonates with fans worldwide and continues to inspire joy and excitement.
