The PS5 and PS4 versions of FIFA are not crossplay compatible, meaning players on different console generations cannot play together online, primarily due to differences in game engine, graphics, and overall performance. However, players can download the PS4 version of FIFA on their PS5 console and play against or with friends using the older version of the game, thanks to backwards compatibility.

Understanding Crossplay and Backwards Compatibility

What is Crossplay?

Crossplay refers to the ability of players on different platforms or console generations to play together online. In the case of FIFA, crossplay is only available for players on the same platform generation, such as PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, or PS4 and Xbox One.

What is Backwards Compatibility?

Backwards compatibility allows players to play older games on newer consoles. The PS5 is backwards compatible with PS4 games, meaning players can insert PS4 game discs into the PS5 and play them, as well as download digital software purchased from the PlayStation Store.
