Roadhog inhales a substance known as “Hogdrogen” during his “Take A Breather” ability. This isn’t just for show; Hogdrogen is a pressurized chemical mixture, primarily composed of lead-based paints, designed to counteract the effects of radiation exposure. The inhalation serves a dual purpose: it rapidly restores a portion of his health and grants him 50% damage resistance for the duration of the ability. So, in short, Roadhog inhales to survive, heal, and become a tougher opponent.
Delving Deeper into Roadhog’s Inhalant
The concept behind Hogdrogen reveals much about Roadhog’s backstory and the world of Overwatch. The radiation exposure aspect suggests a history steeped in environmental devastation and toxic environments, likely stemming from the Australian Outback’s omnium explosion and the subsequent land grab. Roadhog, living in this harsh environment, would have had to find ways to adapt and survive.
The fact that Hogdrogen is made from lead-based paints also speaks to the desperation and resourcefulness of those living in the post-apocalyptic world. Lead paint, readily available and offering some protective properties, would be a viable, albeit dangerous, ingredient in such a concoction.
Roadhog’s “Take A Breather” ability is thus both a gameplay mechanic and a narrative element, offering a glimpse into his life and the world he inhabits. It represents the lengths to which he will go to survive, and the risks he is willing to take to remain a formidable force.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Roadhog
Here’s a dive into some common questions surrounding everyone’s favorite (or most feared) tank:
What exactly is Hogdrogen?
As mentioned earlier, Hogdrogen is a pressurized chemical mixture. The primary components are believed to be lead-based paints designed to combat radiation exposure. The exact recipe remains a mystery, but the overall purpose is clear: to provide quick healing and damage mitigation in a toxic environment.
Does Roadhog actually have asthma?
The article excerpt suggests Roadhog suffers from asthma due to his early life near smoking chimneys, but this is not definitively confirmed lore. It’s more likely the “Take A Breather” ability and his damaged respiratory system are a direct consequence of constant exposure to the toxic Hogdrogen and the irradiated environment he lives in. The heavy breathing sound effects associated with the ability also add to this perception.
Why does Roadhog always wear that pig mask?
The mask serves to hide his identity. Roadhog’s real name is Mako Rutledge. The mask, shaped like a pig, likely represents his association with the swathe of ruthless individuals who took over his home following the omnium explosion.
Is Roadhog in a relationship with Mercy?
This is a popular fan theory and joke within the Overwatch community but is not canon. Blizzard has never officially confirmed a romantic relationship between Roadhog and Mercy. The notion likely stems from the humorous juxtaposition of their contrasting personalities – the brutal Roadhog and the compassionate Mercy.
What is Roadhog’s real name?
Roadhog’s real name is Mako Rutledge. He adopted the moniker “Roadhog” after the Australian government gifted the Omnica Corporation free reign over the Australian outback where he was part of a community of survivalists until the Australian Liberation Front forced them out of their homes.
