Players can only play Total War: Warhammer 1 and Warhammer 2 together on a single map if they have the Mortal Empires DLC installed.
Total War is a series of video games that combines turn-based strategy and resource management with real-time tactical control of battles.
However, it is quite unique compared to other real-time strategy titles as it features flanking maneuvers and formations. As of April 2021, the Total War game series has sold more than 36 million copies.
The series consists of 15 main games and more than 4 spin-off games. In 2015, the series introduced Total War: Warhammer, which takes place in a high fantasy setting.
The second instalment of Warhammer was released in 2017, and you can find common features in the two games. Players can play both games on a single map, however, they need a downloadable content (DLC) pack to do so.
What is a DLC?
A DLC is additional content created for an already released video game and it is distributed on the internet by the game’s publisher. Generally, you have to purchase a DLC to enjoy the new content, but some DLCs are introduced to games for no extra cost.
Warhammer I features 7 DLC packs for players to purchase, and Warhammer II has 10 purchasable DLC packs. These packs introduce cosmetic content, new races, additional levels, modes, and new locations on the world map.
It is crucial to note that it is not mandatory to have a DLC to play the game. Players can thus enjoy the Warhammer base game if they do not purchase a DLC pack.
However, you will not have access to any new content that is released in the DLC if you do not purchase it.
Can you play Total War: Warhammer 1 and 2 together?
In October 2017, Total War released a free DLC pack called Mortal Empires. It is a large campaign in Total War: Warhammer II which combines the playable content from Warhammer I and Warhammer II.
This DLC allows players to play Total War: Warhammer 1 and Warhammer 2 together on a single map. In Mortal Empires, players can play as any lord/faction from the first or second game, including any paid, or free DLC.
There are over 60 playable legendary lords with unique start locations and factions. Moreover, the DLC combines the Old World with the New World landbasses in the Eye of Vortex campaign.
This campaign has more than 120 factions, which are spread across more than 300 settlements. Players can discover over 100 spells and over 350 unit types. It is thus the largest campaign map introduced to Warhammer.
Mortal Empires does not have a global story progression, and thus, no rituals. Instead, it is considered a sandbox gaming mode. However, the Wood Elves and Beastmen have specific objectives, quests, and a final battle.
If you have the DLC, you will find that there is no regional occupation to limit colonisation. This means that factions can settle anywhere on the map. However, the factions may get penalties in bad climates.
Players should remember that in Mortal Empires, some factions have different names, game mechanics, and starting positions. Moreover, some parts of the map are distinctive.
How to access Mortal Empires
In order to enjoy Warhammer I and Warhammer II on a single map, players must own both games. If you do, you can download the Mortal Empires DLC for free from your gaming platform, whether it is Steam or Epic Games.
It is noteworthy that you do not have to install Warhammer I as it is only required to be in your library. After downloading the DLC, you can launch Warhammer II before enjoying both games in one map.
How to install Mortal Empires
Some Warhammer players have revealed that they are having trouble installing the DLC into their game. To install Mortal Empires, right click the game in your library and select the properties option.
In the new menu, select the “DLC” tab to discover the list of DLCs that you own. You should uncheck and check the Moral Empires DLC before you attempt to install it again. However, the download and installation process should begin automatically.
If it does not, you should repeat these steps again. If it still does not work, players can contact the game’s developers, Creative Assembly and Feral Interactive.
