Destiny 2: Savathûn

Although there have been various expansions, The Witch Queen was possibly Destiny 2’s best DLC ever released. It follows the story of Savathûn, the Hive god of cunning, who has stolen the Light to create Hive Guardians.

Savathûn is a dangerous foe who has been waiting in the shadows for some time. Her story dates back to the original Destiny, and its Taken King expansion, in which her brother, Oryx, was a key player.

Savathûn, named Sathona at birth, was born on the gas giant Fundament eons ago. She and her 2 sisters lived in a proto-Hive society called the Osmium Court, which was ruled by their father.

Sathona and her sisters were allegedly tutored by a woman named Toax. Legend has it that the Osmium King found a dead Worm god on the shores of his kingdom.

Seeing it as a warning, he discussed his findings with Taox, who saw it as an opportunity to grow in power.

Taox created a plot to kill the king and his daughters to rule over the Osmium Court, deceiving a rival court into doing so. Unfortunately, the king was slain, but Sathona managed to escape the Court with her sisters and the dead Worm.

Sathona found a wrecked ship in the vast oceans of Fundament, where they spent years repairing the ship to travel to the planet’s core.

After meeting with the Worm Gods, Sathona transformed into Hive. She then became Savathûn and became known for her cunning nature.

Why was Savathûn in hiding?

During the Taken King expansion, Savathûn realized that there was more power to the Light that the Guardians held than she previously estimated. Hence, she decided to go into hiding, which gave her time to strategize and plan accordingly.

Unfortunately, her sister, Xivu Arath, started hunting her down as Savathûn turned her back on her.

However, Savathûn started formulating a plan and steadily took out her Hive opposition. She eventually and gradually earned the title The Witch Queen.

In The Witch Queen’s prologue, it was revealed that Savathûn possessed Vanguard Legend, Osiris, to infiltrate the Vanguard and to weaken them from the inside.

Savathûn stayed within Osiris for quite some time before she eventually revealed herself when she tried to strike a bargain with The Awoke Queen, Mara Sov.

Why did Savathûn return?

After many years of hiding, Savathûn was able to negotiate her way out of her limited state due to the clutches of the Worm Gods.

In an exchange, Mara Sov released Savathûn for Osiris. Savathûn did what was asked, but when she was released, she fled before Mara had time to strike.

Unleashed and with years of planning coming to fruition, Savathûn is ready to take the fight to the Guardians. However she now has a secret weapon up her crusty sleeves.

She somehow managed to steal the Light’s power, which she allegedly acquired during The Witch Queen expansion.

This new power has enabled Savathûn to embolden her Lucent Brood Hive, which means that they can wield the super attacks that the Guardians have been using for years.
