MCoC’s Key to the City will give players access to the locked paths of the Champions of Fortune side quest, however it is only released on a weekly basis.
Marvel Contest of Champions (MCoC) players can now enjoy the Champions of the Fortune side quest, in which players have to progress through different threat levels to defeat enemies.
As you progress through the paths, you may reach a point that requires a Key to the City to enter.
There are 5 threat levels, however, the threat levels are not progression locked. Every path has several paths, but each path requires that you defeat specific characters to earn rewards.
On the official MCoC Discord server, several players have mentioned that they reached a locked point and it prevented them from progressing further.
If you click on the locked path, you will discover that you need a Key to the City to unlock the next path of the threat level.
Allegedly, MCoC will release the keys on a weekly-basis, which essentially means that you will only be able to gain access to the locked areas of the levels weekly.
If the key system was not introduced, players would have been able to complete this side quest in a few days.
However, the side quest is active from Wednesday, 10 January 2024 until Wednesday, 7 February 2024, thus, the developers implemented the key system to prevent players from completing the side quest too quickly.
We recommend that you check your in-game messages every week while the event is active to get your key.
Keep in mind, however, that every key opens the path for all threat levels, which means that you do not need 5 different keys to open the locked paths for all threat levels.
Solo Event
While you are waiting for the keys to be released, you can progress in the Mercs and Defenders Solo Event.
There are various objectives that you can complete to reach milestones and earn rewards. The following table outlines these objectives:
Task | Points |
Defeat a 7-star #Mercenary or #Defenders tagged champion | 1200 |
Win a fight with a 1-star #Mercenary or #Defense tagged character | 100 |
Defeat a 4-star #Mercenary or #Defense tagged character | 600 |
Win a fight with a 7-star #Mercenary or #Defense tagged champion | 750 |
If you complete these tasks, you will be rewarded with points and once you have enough points, you will receive a huge quantity of Bad Attitude Crystal Shards.
Champions of Fortune details
As previously mentioned, there are 5 threat levels, but there are also 4 gated paths that lead to 2 paths. One path has 4 encounters, while the other has 5 encounters and a final boss.
There are also 8 back alley paths that feature 8 ambushes which you have to survive. As you progress through a path, you may come across a treasure chest that contains rich rewards, but you can only open the chest once per path.
In addition to the chest rewards, you will receive Completion Rewards and Exploration rewards once you complete the path.
Every path has unique Completion and Exploration rewards that you can earn, but this means that you have to complete every path to obtain the rewards.

Requirements
To get access to the Champions of Fortune event, MCoC players must reach the Proven Story Milestone. If you are yet to reach the Proven rank, you cannot participate in the side quest.
Fortunately, the event is active for nearly a month, so there is a chance that you can rush through the chapters to gain access to the side quest.
That being said, every threat level has a recommended team rating which essentially indicates how strong your team needs to be if you want to successfully complete the level.
If you are below the recommended team rating, you should upgrade your heroes to ensure that you will succeed in the level.
