Where Did Cyberpunk 2077 Come From?
The Birth of a Dream
Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most highly anticipated and hyped video games of all time. Developed by CD Projekt Red, the game is an open-world, action role-playing game set in a futuristic world where humanity is on the brink of a new era of technological advancement. But, have you ever wondered where this idea came from? How did this dream of a dystopian future, riddled with corporations and cyber enhancements, become a reality? Let’s delve into the history of Cyberpunk 2077 and explore the journey that led to its creation.
The Inspiration: Classic Cyberpunk
The concept of Cyberpunk 2077 can be traced back to the early 1980s, when video games were still in their infancy. Games like Wasteland, The Darklands, and Shadowrun started exploring the theme of futuristic worlds where technology had become an integral part of people’s lives. Widowmaker, a 1992 PC game, was one of the first games to introduce the concept of corporations fighting for control in a post-apocalyptic world.
The Power of Novels
In the world of literature, the term "cyberpunk" was coined by Bruce Bethke in his 1980 short story "Cyberpunk". The term soon gained popularity, and authors like William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, and K.W. Jeter wrote novels that explored the intersection of humanity and technology. Gibson’s Neuromancer, published in 1984, is widely regarded as one of the seminal works in the cyberpunk genre.
The Game that Began it All
In the mid-1990s, CD Projekt, a Polish video game developer, acquired the rights to R.A. Kaelin’s game, Cyberpunk, an Amiga and PC game released in 1992. The game was a 3D RPG set in a futuristic city, with a focus on hacking, surveillance, and social interactions. Although Cyberpunk received moderate reviews, it laid the foundation for CD Projekt’s vision of a cyberpunk world.
From Concept to Reality
2002 saw the birth of the original Cyberpunk: Realms of Darkness concept, which would eventually evolve into Cyberpunk 2077. The game was initially planned for the PS2, but it wasn’t until 2009 that the project was revitalized, and Kacper Szczecina, the game’s current project lead, joined the team.
Building a World
In 2010, CD Projekt Red assembled a team of around 15 people, known as the "Cyberpunk Core Team", to work on the game’s concept, art style, and setting. The team drew inspiration from movies like Blade Runner, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Ghost in the Shell.
The Development Process
Development began in earnest in 2012, with a team of over 100 people working on the game. CD Projekt Red adopted a Triple-A game development approach, allocating significant resources to the project.
A World of Technology and Humanity
Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in a world where corporations have replaced governments, and people have turned to cyber enhancements to survive. The game explores themes of identity, class, and mortality in a world where humanity is blurring the lines between technology and biology.
