The house you are in in Hogwarts Legacy does not influence your gameplay, but it does determine your common room and robe colours.
Hogwarts Legacy is an action role-playing video game that is set in 1899. The game is based on the classic Harry Potter novels, however, the game takes place prior to the events of the novels.
You can explore a fictional world in the game, but in order to do that, you have to be placed into a house and many players are curious about whether the house they are in matters in the game.
Hogwarts Legacy houses
Similarly to the Harry Potter novels, Hogwarts Legacy has 4 different houses, namely Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, and Ravenclaw. These houses are named after the founders of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Each house has its own common room and will unlock varying gameplay options for your character. The table below describes each house’s common room:

| Gryffindor | It is a grand communal area which is filled with sofas and rugs. The colour scheme is red and gold. |
| Slytherin | This room features a dark set of large open spaces. It is tinted with green furnishings and plants. |
| Ravenclaw | Ravenclaw’s common room is a gorgeous upper-floor room decorated with star-themed rugs and curtains. |
| Hufflepuff | This basement area is filled with warm lampshades and lightning. It gives a homely feel with plants. |
Does the house matter in Hogwarts Legacy?
When you start playing Hogwarts Legacy, you have to be sorted into a house. The Sorting Hat will ask you some questions to determine which house you have to be in.
While each house is distinct, it is important to remember that aside from a single main quest, much of what players will experience is the same, no matter which house they are in.
Therefore, the house that you are in does not matter. However, the houses have house-specific quests, which means that you can only access those quests if you are in those specific house. If you are in Slytherin, you cannot complete Hufflepuff’s house quest.
The most important differences between the houses that you will encounter are:
- The house colours incorporated into some of your gear will reflect your house
- You will have exclusive access to your house’s common room and a “floo flame” fast travel point.
- Extra socialising and introductions with the other 5th year students in your house
- Specific extra dialogue that may reference your house
Apart from these, players will experience the same storyline and activities in their houses. It appears there are no bonuses or exclusive companions that are locked to 1 house.
You can socialise, complete quests, and collaborate with other 5th year students from each of the houses.
Your house in Hogwarts Legacy is therefore more a matter of personal choice than narrative consequence.
Can you change your house?
Unfortunately, you cannot change your house once the sorting ceremony has concluded. After asking a few questions, the Sorting Hat will recommend a house for you. However, you do not have to choose that house if you do not want to.
If you want to be in a specific house, you can select the house during the sorting ceremony. If you decide later on you want to change your house, you cannot do so. The only way to change your house is by creating an entirely new character.
Sorting Hat’s questions
During the sorting ceremony, you have to answer some questions before you are sorted into a house. Your answers determine the house that you are sorted into. If you want to be sorted into a specific house, you should note the following:

If you choose Bravery, you will be sorted into Gryffindor. Although you may not get the house that you want, you will get an opportunity to select the house you want to be in before the ceremony concludes.
House specific quests
Every house in Hogwarts Legacy has unique quests. Keep in mind that you cannot access to another house’s quest. The house-exclusive quests are:

| Hufflepuff | Prisoner of Love | Players have to uncover the mystery of how Anne was wrongly imprisoned. You can begin this quest by talking to the portrait of Eldritch Diggory. |
| Ravenclaw | Ollivander’s Heirloom | You have to help Ollivander track down an heirloom that was stolen by Richard Jackdaw ages ago. |
| Slytherin | Scrope’s Last Hope | The house elf, Scrope, asks you to retrieve a ring from a cave. |
