Elden Ring: Carian Study Hall

The Carian Study Hall is one of the various locations in Elden Ring, however, it is home to one of the most terrifying enemies in the game.

In this action role-playing video game, Elden Ring, you can control a customisable character on a journey to repair the titular Elden Ring and become the new Elden Lord. There are many regions, locations, and cities for you to explore in the game.

One of the locations that you can explore is the Carian Study Hall, which is a large library-like location full of specters and magic users.

Locations in Elden Ring

There are 6 main areas for you to explore. To make exploration easier in Elden Ring, you can use your steed, Torrent, as the primary mode of transportation.

Locations are vast and interconnected and the world of Elden Ring is a persistent Map that can be traversed without loading screens.

The large world scale allows for freedom while promoting exploration. Unfortunately, there are no towns and villagers as the world collapsed due to the Shattering.

However, numerous non-player-characters (NPCs) and merchants are scattered throughout the world.

Although there are no towns, you can explore ruins, dungeons, and exploration hubs. It is noteworthy, though, that these areas are full of monsters and enemies that you have to vanquish to fully explore the area.

The Study Hall is an optional, small dungeon that is meant for magic users and daredevils.

Although it is an optional feature, it is recommended that you explore the area to earn experience points and items from defeating enemies.

The Carian Study Hall can be found in East Liurnia of the Lakes, and this is the only way to access the Divine Tower of Liurnia.

The study hall is quite small and features a few enemies, however, the enemy it does have is one of the toughest in the game as it spams magic attacks at a consistent rate.

It is worth noting that you will gain immediate access to the Carian Study Hall, but the entirety of this location and the passageway to the Divine Tower of Liurnia will be locked until you acquire the Carian Inverted Statue.

To acquire this item, you have to complete the Ranni the Witch questline. This quest can be procured from Ranni, however, to speak to her, you have to complete Caria Manor in northern Liurnia.

After drafting Royal Knight Loretta, you will get access to the Three Sisters area, which contains 3 distinct towers.

You have to go to the western tower, where you will find Ranni. During your conversation with Ranni, she will offer you the chance to serve her. Bear in mind that you have to complete several quests before you will get the Carian Inverted Statue.

By commencing the Ranni the Witch questline, you will unlock several side quests and main story quest lines. It is advisable that you begin this quest line as it is the only way to acquire the Carian Inverted Statue and unlock other quests.

Carian Study Hall stairs

While exploring the Carian Study Hall, you will come across some stairs. These stairs are a hint that there is actually an inverted version of the Carian Study Hall.

However, in order to unlock the inverted Carian Study Hall, you need to get the Carian Inverted Statue or the Carian Study Hall Key.

As previously explained, you have to complete the Ranni the Witch questline, to acquire the Carian Inverted Statue.

As for the Carian Study Hall Key, you have to complete a quest for Ranni that includes finding Blaidd and the Fingerslayer Blade. After completing the quest, Ranni will give you the Carian Study Hall Key.

Once you have the Statue, or the Key, you can access the inverted Carian Study Hall.

Carian Study Hall pedestal

It is important to note that the Carian Study Hall stairs and the Carian Study Hall pedestal are linked. This means that you have to procure the Carian Study Hall Pedestal Key and the Carian Study Hall Inverted Statue to use the Carian Study Hall pedestal.

Once you have the Pedestal key, you can enter the hall in the Carian Study Hall and put the Carian Inverted Statue on the Pedestal. This will trigger a cutscene. After the cutscene, you have to go back to the library, which has now been inverted.

You can use wall edges and beams to reach a wooden platform in the center of the hall. You have to stand in its center to activate the lift, which will take you down to the front door. When you open the door, you will find the Divine Tower of Liurnia.

Carian Study Hall Bow

As mentioned, you will encounter one of the most difficult enemies in Elden Ring in the Carian Study Hall.

Once the entire study hall is upside down, you will find the lift room that consists of 3 magic hands. You have to run past them to avoid getting cornered in the tiny room.

Going to the center of the hall will cause Preceptor Miriam to appear immediately. She wears a large wide-brimmed hat and uses a staff to cast many types of sorceries at her enemies.

Players have to be wary of her long-range sorceries, especially her use of Loretta’s Greatbow. This weapon summons a magical bow and charged arrow to strike you with incredible damage and precision. She can two-hit you with this spell, depending on your character’s level.

Although it is one of Miriam’s weapons, you can acquire the bow by vanquishing the Royal Knight, Loretta, who is the boss of Caria Manor, which is in the northern part of West Liurnia.

Carian Study Hall hidden path

The first time you enter the Carian Study Hall, you may notice a hidden path, which can only be unlocked once you have placed the Carian Inverted Statue on the pedestal in front of the Celestial Globe by the entrance of the study hall.

After placing the statue, you will find the hidden path and area past a window in the elevator shaft.

After you drop down onto the ledge around the walls of the lift shaft, before you exit to the bay window to the South, you should be wary of the 3 Lesser Fingercreepers which are perched against the walls outside.

When you exit the window, it opens into the interior of the tower. If players proceed forward, they will encounter Preceptor Miriam on a giant inverted archway across a dead drop. She will immediately cast Loretta’s Greatbow and Glinstone Phalanx.

Tips for defeating Preceptor Miriam

Players should note that they can either fight Miriam in the normal Carian Study Hall, or in the inverted Carian Study Hall.

It may be difficult for melee builds to fight her before acquiring the Carian Inverted Statue , as she will teleport further up the tower as you get closer.

Therefore, you should attempt to defeat her once the hall is inverted. If you reduce Preceptor Miriam’s health points, she will teleport further up the tower.

The summons that accompanies Miriam can be triggered early by running past where she first appears and up the tower.

Miriam will not cast spells or teleport away if you are standing in the small room at the top of the second elevator. Players can use a ranged weapon to attack Miriam from this position.

She can be thrown out using the Ash of War Stamp near the railings. The fall will kill her instantly.

However, the fight can easily be won if you force her to come down to the floor with the Study Hall Entrance Sites of Grace, then riding up with the elevator. While trying to attack you, she should fall into the elevator’s hole.
