There are 13 different Beasts that you can catch in Hogwarts Legacy, and each beast can be assigned to a specific Vivarium.
In this adventurous video game, Hogwarts Legacy, you can assume the role of a witch or wizard in the Wizarding World. The game is based on the classic Harry Potter novels, but its events take place before the novels.
As you progress in the game, you will come across many beasts. However, many players are uncertain about which beasts they should place in which vivarium.
The Vivarium
The Vivarium in Hogwarts Legacy allows you to keep and nurture unique beasts. However, you will not initially have access to the Vivarium as you have to complete a series of quests to unlock it.
You can create the Beast Vivarium through the main story quests, The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and The Loom.
During this quest, Deek will introduce you to the Nab-Sack, which you can take outside of Hogwarts to rescue beasts. You have to catch certain beats to complete the quest, but some beasts can be quite jumpy.
It is best to sneak around slowly while you are attempting to catch them.
Once the quest is complete, you can conjure up the Vivarium where you can let your beasts run free.
Hogwarts Legacy: Which Beasts in which Vivarium
You can catch or earn a total of 13 beasts for your Vivarium. Some beasts, such as the Unicorn, are more difficult to catch than others, while other Beasts only spawn at a certain time of the day.
Since there are so many beasts, it may be difficult to know which Beasts you have to allocate to a specific Vivarium.
Each Vivarium type is outlined below, along with which Beasts you can allocate to it:
Vivarium type | Beasts |
Grassland |
|
Swamp |
|
Coast |
|
Forest |
|
It is important to note that the table is only a recommendation and it is not mandatory to assign a Beast to a specific Vivarium.
One Hogwarts Legacy player assigned Thestrals, Mooncalves, and Toads to the swamp while Unicorns, Hippogriffs, Kneazles, and Puffskeins are in the Forest.
Nifflers and birds are placed in the Coastal Vivarium and Phoenix and Graphorns are in the Mountains.
You can therefore place your Beasts in any Vivarium, though the golden rule is to place the Beasts in a Vivarium which is similar to the location in which you found them.
Once a Beast is inside your Vivarium, you can pet and feed it. You can use your brush to stroke their fur and give them treats. If you treat them well, they will reward you with materials that can be used to upgrade gear.
You should remember that every Vivarium can hold up to 12 Beasts, however, it is limited to 4 different species.
This means that you can have 11 Puffskeins and 1 Hippogriff, or if you have 1 Puffskein, 1 Jobberknoll, 1 Mooncalf, and 1 Hippogriff, you cannot add another creature of a different species to that Vivarium.
How to catch beasts
To use your Nab-Sack to catch creatures, you have to equip it like you would equip a spell. So you cast it as a spell, but you have to aim at the creature in question. You should then follow the given instructions to complete the capture.
If a Beast is running away from you, you can use the Accio or Levioso spell to hold the creature in place before you capture it with the Nab-Sack.
Once you have captured a Beast, you can release it in your Vivarium, which is in your Room of Requirement.
Expanding your Vivarium
When you unlock the Vivarium, you will only have access to 1 type. You can expand your Vivarium by completing certain quests. The quests that you have to complete to unlock another Vivarium are:
Vivarium | Quest |
Coast | You have to complete the The Plight of the House-Elf side mission. This quest will become available after the main mission, The High Keep. |
Swamp | Players have to complete the Foal of the Dead quest, which you can only access once you have completed the Charles Rookwood’s Trial story chapter. |

Mooncalves go in the swamp because they’re nighttime creatures and unicorns go in the forest because the Thestrals are in the swamp Unicorns and Thestrals don’t like each other so they can’t be in the same vivarium
I think the beasts that enable a certain vivarium should live there (eg thestrals and swamps). Pairs that react badly to each other (watch their behavior) are unicorns/ thestrals, hippogriffs/ nifflers, fwoopers/ pheonix, kneazles/ diricrawls.
I read a suggestion on reddit that beasts will only sit and relax in their ideal vivarium, and sleep in vivariums with no predators.
